All you have to do in bowling is knock down the pins. Simple, right? No. There are a ton of very challenging things that you have to overcome in order to get strikes.

There are three extremely important things that you need to overcome: oil on the lane, accuracy, and a confident mindset.

Bowling lanes have a slight coating of oil to protect the lane from damage, to make the ball roll easily down a 60 foot lane, and to make it challenging for players. The correct roll in bowling for a right handed person will be that your ball is curving from right to left. If there is a little more oil on the lane, the ball will travel more straight, but if there is less oil on the lane, your ball will have more of a curving motion. Bowlers have to see what the oil pattern looks like and try to figure out where to throw the ball in order for it to strike. People use different bowling balls in order to play the oil pattern correctly. Oil patterns are made to challenge players, and to make the game more exciting.

The next thing that you need to overcome is accuracy. This takes years of practice to master. The ability to throw the ball in the same place, for an entire game, is very challenging. All you have to do is just relax and throw the ball. People’s natural reaction is to try to “guide” the ball down the lane, and this just makes it harder to control the ball. People tense up and don’t roll the ball correctly. The key to being accurate is to be focused but relaxed. Just swing your arm straight back, and have your arm follow through at the end of the swing. This makes your swing a lot more accurate. If you can pinpoint a spot on the lane, and consistently hit that spot, you're on the right track.

The last, and probably the most important thing to remember, is a good mindset. A good mindset is just controlling your emotions and not getting frustrated. People tend to get very frustrated when something doesn’t go their way, and it is the exact same way in bowling. I have seen many people (including myself) lose their temper when they don’t bowl well. If you get frustrated, you bowl drastically worse. Professional bowlers even have a hard time controlling their emotions sometimes, so that goes to show that it happens to the best bowlers in the world. All you have to do is have a confident yet relaxed mindset. Just stay relaxed, and keep your composure. If you do those two things, you will see that you will bowl a lot better.

Most people don’t see bowling as an actual sport, but it is extremely hard to get good. It is the fourth most frustrating sport in the world after football, tennis, and golf. Bowling is definitely a dying sport, and it needs young people to get introduced to the sport. It is a very fun but challenging sport.

  1. I liked how you split the things you need to learn to get good at bowling into three different categories and explained them in detail. This a a great writing piece!

  2. One way I personally relate to this is that sometimes my family goes bowling for fun and this was very helpful and informative about bowling in many ways. One thing I liked about this piece of writing was the sheer amount of information inside of it. A great example of this was when you explained oil patterns by saying,"Bowling lanes have a slight coating of oil to protect the lane from damage, to make the ball roll easily down a 60 foot lane, and to make it challenging for players." The way you explained the oil patterns was in an easy and comprehensible manner. This piece was very informative and great for explaining some of the different aspects of bowling to someone who's a novice at it.

  3. I love that last part is teaching the audience why it helps to keep it cool even when you make a mistake. I also love how in the paragraph about keeping it calm, "I have seen many people (including myself) lose their temper when they don’t bowl well." I love this quote because you were able to place yourself into the quote so that it sounds much more relatable to everyone.

  4. A central idea in this, is that Bowling can be a lot more than it seems to the regular eye. This can go with a lot of other sports including running, golf, wrestling, and more. They all of a strategy in them that most people don't get. Also, I like how you organized your body paragraphs. For every paragraph, you explained one tip that you gave in your intro. For example, it says, "The next thing that you need to overcome is accuracy". This shows that you are using transition words to organize the paragraphs.

  5. A central idea in this story is that you have to try and over time you will get better and have more skill. I think that is a great thing to do that the more you practice the better you will be. With bowling it is a hard sport but if we practice we can be alot better. "There are a ton of very challenging things that you have to overcome in order to get strikes." And "If you do those two things, you will see that you will bowl a lot better." You told us we will be better with those thing. So if we practice we can all get better. I also liked how detailed your piece was.

  6. I think the main idea is calmness. I really like the why he hooked the readers in. "All you have to do in bowling is knock down the pins. Simple, right?".

  7. I think that the message of this piece is that even though bowling is difficult to get well at, it's definitely worth giving a shot."The correct roll in bowling for a right handed person will be that your ball is curving from right to left. If there is a little more oil on the lane, the ball will travel more straight, but if there is less oil on the lane, your ball will have more of a curving motion." This quote demonstrates how you did so well at explaining in a way that was very clear to the audience.

  8. "Bowling is definitely a dying sport, and it needs young people to get introduced to the sport." I like the way you encouraged people to play the sport without just coming out and saying it. When you think about the central idea it could just be bowling but there is way more. This makes me think about how other sports or talents are hard. They both connect and make you think at the end.

  9. I think the main idea of this piece was to take on challenges. When you said "There are a ton of very challenging things that you have to overcome in order to get strikes." I could understand that bowling is much harder than it seems. I really liked how you showed the different ways that bowling is hard and challenging. Great job!

  10. I think the main Idea was that even though something can be hard in life you can over come it and be beater at it. Where it sayed
"All you have to do in bowling is knock down the pins. Simple, right? No. There are a ton of very challenging things that you have to overcome in order to get strikes." so I can now under stand what he has to do to get good and how hard it really is

  11. I never knew that there was this much stuff required to practice to become a professional at bowling! I really like where you said " Simple, right? No" because it shows that there is a lot more than what most people think about bowling. Excellent job!

  13. Your central idea is a good topic because of you relating to people including me. I once did bowling as a kid sometimes, but have completely forgotten about it in the years. It was always frustrating to a lot of people thinking that they were going to get a strike, but they only made nine pins out of ten. "A good mindset is just controlling your emotions and not getting frustrated." Excellent job with your work and have a good day.

  14. I am not a avid bowler, but I can relate to both the difficulty of being a good bowler and the central idea of using a calm state of mind to succeed in difficult or frustrating activities. I really liked how you explained all the elements to getting a strike: "if there is a little more oil on the lane, the ball will travel more straight, but if there is less oil on the lane, your ball will have more of a curving motion. Bowlers have to see what the oil pattern looks like and try to figure out where to throw the ball in order for it to strike. People use different bowling balls in order to play the oil pattern correctly. Oil patterns are made to challenge players, and to make the game more exciting". And then how you used that knowledge to make argument that bowling should be considered a sport because of it's difficulty.

  15. the last part I like because it teaches the readers how to get strikes and how the lanes work.

  16. I can relate to being bad at bowling. I remember times where I get frustrated when I do bad in bowling. "A good mindset is just controlling your emotions and not getting frustrated. People tend to get very frustrated when something doesn’t go their way, and it is the exact same way in bowling. I have seen many people (including myself) lose their temper when they don’t bowl well." I liked how you explained the concepts of bowling quickly but still pretty indepth.

  17. I like how you listed ways how to get good at bowling and you added some things that you should know about it. Also I liked the beginning of your article " All you have to do in bowling is knock down the pins. Simple, right? No. There are a ton of very challenging things that you have to overcome in order to get strikes." I think this is what made me want to read more about it. I can relate to me being bad at bowling and I used to get lucky, but now that I read this I will maybe be better at bowling.

  18. I like when you said "All you have to do in bowling is knock down the pins. Simple, right?" because it really shows that bowling is not just about trying to hit the pins down. And i like the way you described the way yo need to think about bowling .

  19. I like how much detail you had to backup all the challenges to bowling instead of just telling us the challenges and not giving us detail to support it. I also love when you added,"Simple right? No." It really intrigues us readers to want to keep reading and wondering why it's not simple.

  20. I liked how you explained the sport, now i know more about bowling. I also like how you explained how the ball can curve. I think this story is about how the most simple sports have a lot of challenges.

  21. I think the message is that if you remain calm, you will do things much better. I thought this when you said, "Just stay relaxed, and keep your composure. If you do those two things, you will see that you will bowl a lot better." This made me think that the message was to remain calm, and you will always do better. I liked how you described bowling tecniques and gave details to support what you said. Like when you said, "Bowling lanes have a slight coating of oil to protect the lane from damage, to make the ball roll easily down a 60 foot lane, and to make it challenging for players...Bowlers have to see what the oil pattern looks like and try to figure out where to throw the ball in order for it to strike." Here, you described what the lane looks like, and how to properly bowl according to the lane.

  22. “I have seen many people (including myself) lose their temper.” I liked this part because you add yourself into the story so it shows that even you can lose your temper and that it is normal. Especially loved this part because In my experience anything needs to take years and years to master and this line really spoke to me.¨The next thing that you need to overcome is accuracy. This takes years of practice to master¨
