Sewing for a good
cause
Do you or someone
you know have a unique skill and want to take it to another level? Well that's what my grandma did. Sewing is a
skill that requires certain strengths and abilities, such as good hand-eye
coordination and attention to detail. It
takes a patient and creative person to sew.
For my grandma, this comes natural to her.
Sewing takes good
hand eye coordination. When you are
sewing you need your hand to guide the fabric through the sewing machine; you
also need your eyes to see where you're guiding it. This is important because
you need to have a straight stitch when sewing.
Attention to detail is another skill crucial for sewing. If you pay close attention to every step in
sewing, your project will come out better.
For example, choosing more high quality fabrics or thread to make the
finished product more sturdy and look professional.
It takes certain
character traits to be a good sewer, including being patient and creative. Patience is important because some projects
take hours. Rushing through a project
can lead to messing up stitches or jamming your fabric in the machine. It's important to be creative with sewing
because using different fabrics is key in order to stand out.
My grandma used all of these skills to try something new and make masks. She taught herself how to make masks by watching YouTube videos. She takes into consideration the things that we like and finds fabrics to match our interests. For example, she made a Star Wars mask for my cousin who loves Star Wars. You should have seen his face light up when she gave it to him. He loved it! She made numerous face masks and a cap for my cousin who is a healthcare worker at Albany Medical Center. Her ability to sew masks was really helpful, especially when masks were hard to find in the beginning of this pandemic.
In conclusion, my
grandma is a great sewer, and she has used this skill to help many people
during this challenging time. Sewing isn’t
for everyone. It takes special skills
and a certain personality in order to be successful at sewing. Is there a way you can help others with a
skill you have?

You provided great detail to support your claims. I love how you said "Sewing isn’t for everyone.". That's the truth, and it supports the point that this isn't really about sewing! Your central idea was about helping others with your own special talents. I like how you started the hook with a question.
ReplyDeleteI love how in the intro you describe what it takes to sew, and then be able to include your grandma's natural talents. "It takes a patient and creative person to sew. For my grandma, this comes natural to her." I love how you prove the point of that patience gets rewarded because my mom loves to knit, but sometimes it will take her a month to finish a project. Because you were able to connect a real life person to this writing piece it really made me connect it to my mom.
ReplyDeletewhen you wrote about your grandmother making "numerous face masks and a cap for my cousin who is a healthcare worker at Albany Medical Center." It really shows how nice and hardworking your grandmother is. It also shows that as a sewer you can help people.

ReplyDeleteI think the central idea is that everyone has different interests and strengths, and once you find that spark, you can help others with it. "She made numerous face masks and a cap for my cousin who is a healthcare worker at Albany Medical Center. That shows how you grandmother helped others with her talent, and not keeping it all to herself.

ReplyDeleteYou did a great job explaining how complex sewing can really be. My grandma also sews and I always thought it looked easy and anyone could do it but after reading your story, you changed my opinion. When you said "It takes certain character traits to be a good sewer, including being patient and creative." That really proved to me that not all people can sew.
ReplyDeleteI liked how you used specific detail to show the steps of how to sew. "Attention to detail is another skill crucial for sewing.
