Obesity in America
By: Sam M.
Does spending $173 billion in hospital bills sound like a lot to you? Well, this was spent on obesity. Obesity has become a recurring problem in our world. Severe obesity has increased by a percentage of 4.7% to 9.2% in the last decade. How could this recurring problem affect our society? How could it make a negative impact on the future?
17 year-old Marianna Castrillon is a person who was diagnosed with obesity. Marianna has been struggling with weight her entire life. Her BMI reached more than 56. The highest weight that Marianna reached was 342 pounds. According to NYU Grossman School of Medicine,¨This pandemic has truly caused them to backslide on weight loss goals… or that they've become heavier than they've ever been before.” Marianna claimed that she had felt low self-esteem. She has also experienced other things like anxiety and depression. Anxiety and depression are two main things you experience when having obesity. Marianna Castrillon says, ¨Because of my weight gain, I couldn't enjoy going to amusement parks without feeling embarrassed.”People who are obese usually aren't very active people. Causes of obesity include stress, problems at home, being bullied/picked on, and more. Obesity is measured by (body mass index); it measures your body tissue (your body fatness). If your BMI hovers between 30 and 40 you most likely are going to be diagnosed with obesity. Also, if your BMI is 40 or more you are obese and most likely severely obese as well.
Did you know that 39.8% of humans aged 20 to 39 are obese? Also, 44% of humans aged 40 to 59 are obese. Finally 41% of humans aged 60 or older are obese as well. This shows that obesity is making a bad impact for people of all ages. Having obesity can lead to multiple things, including a stroke, type 2 diabetes, and multiple types of cancer, like breast cancer, liver cancer, kidney cancer, and more.
Marianna Castrillon made the commitment to get back on track with being healthy. Marianna decided to go through the Adolescent Weight Program. The Adolescent Weight Program provides patients with tools to try and get their weight back on track. All of the work that Marianna Castrillon did paid off. At the end of her weight loss journey she had lost 80 pounds in two years!
Obesity can really affect someone's life in a bad way, but Marianna Castrillon showed that obesity is possible to overcome. It is very unhealthy to be obese, but you can still do something about it. If Marianna can fix it, then so can you.
Sams's editorial shows that he thinks that though obesity is hard to overcome it's possible and important to overcome because of the problems that follow behind it. I do agree with Sam’s opinion on how losing weight if obese is important because of health problems and how in general being obese is bad for your mental and physical health. I agree for reasons like how in Sam’s story he explains “Marianna claimed that she had felt low self-esteem. She has also experienced other things like anxiety and depression. Anxiety and depression are two main things you experience when having obesity. Mariana Castrillon says, ‘Because of my weight gain, I couldn't enjoy going to amusement parks without feeling embarrassed.’ ’’ This is important to me and also the line in Sam’s editorial he explains “Having obesity can lead to multiple things, including a stroke, type 2 diabetes, and multiple types of cancer, like breast cancer, liver cancer, kidney cancer, and more.” Through this evidence, I agree with Sam’s point.
ReplyDeleteI believe that your opinion on this issue is that obesity is bad but you can still try to turn things around. I agree with your opinion. I agree because like you said in the text, obesity can lead to anxiety and depression. This makes me agree with you on the claim that it is bad. Evidence that makes me agree with that statement that you can still try to get better is also shown in the editorial when you say that Marianna lost 80 pounds in two years. I believe in your opinion that obesity is bad but you can still try to make it better.
ReplyDeleteSam, your opinion about obesity is that it is unhealthy for people and it has become a prominent issue in our society. I agree with your opinion because obesity can have bad mental and physical health effects, both of which you talked about in your editorial. You specifically mentioned a girl named Marianna that dealt with obesity throughout her life and faced many challenges because of that. You said, “Marianna claimed that she had felt low self-esteem. She has also experienced other things like anxiety and depression. Anxiety and depression are two main things you experience when having obesity.” This shows that the problems with obesity go far beyond how you look. As for physical negatives, you said, “Having obesity can lead to multiple things, including a stroke, type 2 diabetes, and multiple types of cancer, like breast cancer, liver cancer, kidney cancer, and more.” Overall, I agree that obesity is a serious problem, and it offers no good effects for people who struggle with it.
ReplyDeleteIn Sam’s editorial, his stand is that there are too many obese people in today’s world. I completely stand with him and would agree. I agree because 44% of people aged 40-59 are obese, this is around 333 million people. Those 333 people are counted as unhealthy and they also most likely have a hard time moving. But the thing is they still can get healthier and make their lives better.
