You are an actor writing a script, 25 dollars in your pocket and $100 in your bank account. That's it. Three days prior to eviction. But you still have many more problems. You need to open the throttle and work like crazy. Finally the grand reveal; you smash it, and now your name is still talked about in Hollywood 45 years later.

What is it called when you come back when all odds are against you? When you want to just give up, but you have got to search within you, and just pull it all out of you. To get that motivation to not give up and not be a quitter and just fall flat on your face. You have to persevere. To get up after taking a blow. Put forth effort when you are fatigued. You must persevere!

Plenty of prosperous people use perseverance. For instance, Sylvester Stallone was so poor that he was evicted from his apartment and lived on the streets with his dog. He wrote a script named Rocky. Everyone loved it. He was even offered to sell the script for $265,000, but instead he took a much more hazardous and expensive route where he was only guaranteed to make $10,000. It was a much lower amount than originally intended because the person who offered to buy the script wanted to star a popular actor; Stallone wanted to play Rocky himself, so he did not sell the script and starred as Rocky Balboa himself.  During production he had to sell his beloved dog Butkus in order to pay for food, but it all played out after countless hours of backbreaking labor, like working out two times a day six days a week, or when he recorded 63 hours of film in only 28 days.

Rocky was a hit, and Stallone grossed over 2.5million dollars. After that he bought his beloved pet Butkus back, and he even made an appearance in Rocky II. Stallone has been in 92 movies since and has 3 more coming in 2023. And now Stallone is worth over 400 million dollars.

Many lucrative people use perseverance to power through tough times. Perseverance is something that not just successful people need, but everyday normal people need too. Next time you are mad, sad, angry, annoyed, or find yourself in a rough spot, you should think outside of the box and go at it again.

  1. Amazing writing Jake! Usually writing about perseverance can be really corny, but you took the task in a whole different direction and had a great example that represented perseverance perfectly. I love how you wrote this part, "He was even offered to sell the script for $265,000, but instead he took a much more hazardous and expensive route where he was only guaranteed to make $10,000. It was a much lower amount than originally intended because the person who offered to buy the script wanted to star a popular actor; Stallone wanted to play Rocky himself, so he did not sell the script." You wrote this part perfectly! I like it so much because you write about how he purposely took the hard route, and sacrificed so much because he was confident in himself. This is amazing because you didn't even mention it, but I could still understand it perfectly. The whole piece was great; amazing job! Usually I would mention good grammar, but I don't even need to... really outstanding. I think I was supposed to write bad things… but I can't find any!

  2. Perseverance will lead to good results in the end if you stick to it. Jake says, “Put forth effort when you are fatigued. You must persevere!” Jake includes that Sylvester Stallone had been evicted from his apartment he still kept on going and going writing the script for Rocky and even selling his dog, but in the end, he became the lead of Rocky, has been in over 92 movies and is now worth over 400 million dollars. I like how Jake after using strong sensory language like lucrative and phrases like “countless hours of backbreaking labor” in the end he all puts it to a vigorous conclusion that shows how I could reflect perseverance in my own life. Truly outstanding work Jake!

  3. Perseverance is a very important trait for anyone, and I liked how you added in a story of a wildly famous person who used perseverance to get to the top. I could definitely relate to having to use perseverance in my own life, even with everyday things. I loved how you said, “Put forth the effort when you are fatigued. You must persevere.” That’s a strong sentence that people could use in their lives. I liked how you described the story, it almost made it feel like I was there with Stallone when he was going through his difficulties.

  4. Nice job on this writing piece Jake! I think the main message is to keep going even at your lowest. One quote that stood out to me that helped me infer this was, “Sylvester Stallone was so poor that he was evicted from his apartment and lived on the streets with his dog. He wrote a script named Rocky. Everyone loved it.” I liked how you used figurative language like “You need to open the throttle.” I also liked the use of strong sensory language, like lucrative and hazardous.

  5. I was able to connect with your story on perseverance because of when I first tried out for a soccer team. This really helped understand where you were coming from. I liked how you used sensory language like prosperous to really help bring your story to life. You said, “You need to open the throttle and work like crazy.” This line helped me to visualize Sylvester Styllone working very hard to get to where he is today. You also gave clear visuals as to how anyone could apply this lesson to their own lives. Overall really nice piece Jake!

  6. Jake I really liked your central idea of never giving up. It was very easy to understand because I have seen the movie Rocky, which was a great decision. “Stallone wanted to play Rocky himself, so he did not sell the script and starred as Rocky Balboa himself.” This reminds me of when I was little and I was going to sell my pokemon cards. I eventually decided to keep them and collect more, so I could sell them for more. Great job Jake!

  7. From Natalie D.

I think your essay is really good, and I loved how you chose perseverance as your word. I can definitely connect to this word because perseverance is a big part of everyone's life. We all need perseverance to keep going. I have to use perseverance when I am playing sports because I know I need to keep going even if I don’t want to. Just like you said, “Next time you are mad, sad, angry, annoyed, or find yourself in a rough spot, you should think outside of the box and go at it again.” You always have to keep going. I also love that you chose to do your essay off this movie and actress. I think Rocky is such a good movie and you did a great job explaining it and what Sylvester Stallone’s life was like.
