The ball flies down the field, moving from player to player. The teammates on the field work together to get the ball near the goal. You receive the ball from your teammate and see an opening. You race down the field, ball at your feet, passing players, going full speed towards the goal. You kick the ball as hard as you can. The goalie lunges for it and crashes to the ground as  the ball sails to the back of the net. The crowd leaps to their feet, cheering. Your teammates run up to you with grins and congratulations.

Soccer is a very fascinating and interesting sport to play and watch, but first there are several crucial topics that you must know to understand the game. One of these topics is the positions. On the field each player has an individual position. The main positions are goalie, defense, midfield and offense (the positions can also have different names, but this is what some people choose to call them).

The first position is the goalie, or the goalkeeper. The goalie is arguably the hardest position to play, as well as sometimes the most important. The goalie’s job is to protect the goal and forestall the other team from scoring goals. The goalie generally stays by the goal and is also the only player on the field allowed to use their hands.

The next position is defense. The defenders’ job is to support the goalie and prohibit the other team from getting shots on the goal. The defense is usually the nearest line of players to the goal besides the goalie. Unlike the goalkeeper, there are usually three to four defenders on the field at once, depending on where the coach decides to put his players.

One other position played in soccer is the offense. Similar to defense, there can be multiple players on offense, but generally there are only one to three. The offense is at the top of the field, closest to the opposing team’s goal. This makes sense, since the players on offense (or the forwards) are usually the players that score the goals in the game.

The last position on the field is the midfield. The midfield is in between the defense and the offense, in the middle of the field, hence the name. The midfielders play an important role on the field and fundamentally keep all the players on the field together.

Each and every position on the field plays a critical role in the triumph of a team. In the absence of any of the positions the team would fall apart and success would be practically inconceivable. Each player is crucial. Players support each other, on and off the field.

When you play soccer you create bonds with other players and develop teamwork skills. When you play on a team, you encounter new people and make new friends. These are very important skills to know, not just in sports, but life in general. Can you imagine a world without teamwork and friendships?

  1. I really like how in the beginning you say “The goalie lunges for it and crashes to the ground the ball sails to the back of the net.” this really shows the motion of the ball and the goalie and it so good I can even picture the goalie jumping in my head I really enjoyed reading your writing piece cause the words showed me what it's like to play a soccer game not only did you show me you also showed how the other people play the game to.

  2. The central idea of the story that was conveyed to me was that teamwork is a crucial and essential part of making something successful. A quote I liked from Grace’s story is, “In the absence of any of the positions the team would fall apart and success would be practically inconceivable. Each player is crucial.” I like this quote because it not only applies to soccer but every other sport, and thus is easily relatable. The quote reinforces the central idea by further explaining that all people play an important role in a team and that all of them are required to make something successful. I also liked the use of mature vocabulary, such as “inconceivable” and “fundamentally,” and the use of figurative language such as “the ball sails to the back of the net.”

  3. Everyone has an important role whether it is in a sport like when you said “Each and every position on the field plays a critical role in the triumph of a team.” or in life in general. I liked this quote because it really tied everything together. Another thing that you did well is how you showed lots of detail when you are describing getting a goal, “You kick the ball as hard as you can. The goalie lunges for it and crashes to the ground as the ball sails to the back of the net. The crowd leaps to their feet, cheering. Your teammates run up to you with grins and congratulations.”

  4. Grace, this is awesome! I loved the depth you go into in your explanation about the different positions. If I didn’t play soccer, I might understand the game when I read this. I also loved how you used strong sentences to make the whole piece more interesting. For example this sentence, “Each and every position on the field plays a critical role in the triumph of a team.”
The central idea of this piece, teamwork, was a good topic. I can see the central idea throughout this whole piece. It really gets demonstrated in sentences like this, “The defenders’ job is to support the goalie and prohibit the other team from getting shots on the goal.” You did a really good job rendering the main theme within the piece. Almost every paragraph described how that position in soccer helped, and supported the rest of the team.

  5. I really like how you started your story with, “The ball flies down the field, moving from player to player.” This detail shows how the ball moves from player to player on the soccer field. I also liked when you said,” The goalie is arguably the hardest position to play, as well as sometimes the most important.” I liked this part the most because it made me more interested in soccer and how to play. I learned a lot of information about soccer and about the different positions that are played in Soccer that I never knew about before. This made me more interested in soccer and what kind of position I want to play in soccer.

  6. Nice job writing this essay, Grace, most of the writing brings me back to when I used to play soccer; when you construe what positions do what, if I didn’t play soccer I would probably have at least have a primitive consideration of the sport. But in your story you say, “The midfielders play an important role on the field and fundamentally keep all the players on the field together.” This unquestionably incorporates the central idea of the topic, teamwork, to the story. Also, when you say, ¨Each player is crucial. Players support each other, on and off the field,¨ this lingers the extension of teamwork in your story, and a lot of the things you have established in your story I can relate too because I used to play soccer, principally the team work part. Overall this story is absolutely adequately written. And, I chiefly admired when you used fundamentally and inconceivable in your writing.

  7. I think the central idea is teamwork, “These are very important skills to know, not just in sports, but in life in general. Can you imagine a world without teamwork and friendships?” The world would be an utter disaster without teamwork in every way possible, on sports teams, in corporations, and in medical service teams. Also, I love the way you focused on each position and explained the importance of all of them. Great job, Grace!
