Masks Work

By Madeline S.

Have you ever decided to go against COVID-19 guidelines, or at least considered it? People should continue to abide by Covid guidelines even while it seems the pandemic is approaching the endemic phase.

Studies have shown that COVID-19 guidelines and masks do work, and right now most of the Covid patients in the hospital are unvaccinated. While it's unlikely that a vaccinated person will get Covid, an unvaccinated person is five times more likely to get covid and ten times more likely to die from it. Even if you've already had Covid, getting vaccinated will protect you from possibly getting it again. Anybody can get COVID-19, even people  that are young and healthy. "To make an assumption that you're immune or protected from the potentially terrible consequences of this virus just because you're young is a foolish assumption," says Dr McWilliams, an infectious disease expert.

Rising cases are strongly linked to people saying masks don't work. Out of a survey of 1,575 people in the UK, 10% of people chose not to follow Covid guidelines, and that same 10% of people are less likely to check their sources. For some rule breakers, it's not about people not knowing the rules; instead, it's about people not trusting the people who are making those rules.  People in denial are leading to more Covid cases. "The things we are asking people to do are not easy. They are definitely disruptive, they're definitely challenging, but they do have evidence to show that they work when implemented broadly, widely, and followed by everyone,” says Nipunie Rajapakse.

So if you ever feel like Covid guidelines are nothing more than annoying, then remember, they were made to help you and the people around you. If everyone follows Covid guidelines, we might be able to overcome the COVID-19 virus.

  1. I agree with you Madeline. I do agree that people should follow the covid-19 restriction guidelines and wear masks. I do agree that people should be getting their full vaccines and possibly a booster shot, because the research shows that vaccines protect people. I think people who don’t wear masks are simpletons because they won’t look at the research on the topic.

  2. I disagree with your opinon that covid guidelines work. I disagree because most masks don’t work. The only masks that work are the N-95 masks. N-95 masks stop you from transmitting to other people. Other people can still give it to you.

  3. This is a very controversial topic. I don’t agree and I agree with some of the statements in your editorial. One thing that I do agree with is when you said, “Anybody can get COVID, even if you are young and healthy.” One statement that I don’t agree with is, “People in denial are leading to more COVID cases.” The reason I don’t agree with this is that it is an outright guess and you have nothing to back this up in your editorial. Despite my disagreements, It was a very good written editorial.

  4. Maddie I totally agree with your opinion on the covid 19 virus. I also feel that by protecting yourself from the virus using the proper precautions will lead to a healthier body. The fact that you said in the editorial that most of the patients in the hospital right now are not vaccinated just further shows how keeping your body healthy has its benefits.

  5. Madeline, I personally do not agree with the topic of how masks are an efficient way to slow the spread of COVID-19. In an article written by New York Times the author wrote, “Some experts have said that cloth masks are inadequate to protect from the variant, and have urged the C.D.C. to recommend respirators for ordinary citizens.” If one mask works but not the other that should be a sign to just drop the entire concept of them. Especially considering we are this far to overcoming the pandemic, and many individuals are no longer wearing masks. If there ever was a situation where your surrendered by ten people without a mask, and your the only one wearing it, then your still going to be at risk of COVID-19 with or without it.

  6. I can see your opinion on masks in that they should be continued to be worn. I agree with that. But I disagree with people who they should not be made mandatory. Studies have shown that masks block 50% of covid particles. Higher end masks blocking up to 90%. But why make masks mandatory if getting vaccinated makes it unlikely to get covid? Yes masks help and make people feel safer. Especially those at higher risk. But I believe they shouldn't be mandatory at places when the vaccine makes it unlikely to get covid. Great piece Madeline!
