Littering

Waves crash and roll  reaching for dry land
my heart pounding to the rhythm
of feet hitting the sand. My face stands
out in the crowd of smiles as sadness roams the luminous ocean
trying to hide beneath screams of joy.
Hundreds of seagulls rip up the beach, their
ravenous minds searching for food.
Kids bury their used wrappers and cans
in the beautiful sand in which provides
for animals as their parents watch
carelessly because they too throw trash
to the ground like earth is their garbage
can. Suddenly the ocean turns into
a place of regret, animals still holding onto
the hope that someday their
home that was once beautiful and strong becomes
more beautiful and stronger than ever
Somehow I know that we won’t change no
matter how big the consequences are,
so I sit and watch hundreds of people
from miles away knowing that
change is thousands of miles away too.

  1. You did a great job getting your central idea across. I believe that the central idea is carelessness, a quote from the poem is " Kids bury their used [w]rappers and cans into the beautiful sand in which provided for animals as their parents watch carelessly because they too throw trash to the ground like earth is their garbage can." This shows how the message is people are too careless and they are contributing to destroying our great planet.

  2. I like how you used hyperbole to show how hard it will be to change our habits, "change is thousands of miles away too." The line that portrays the mood is, "Suddenly the ocean turns into a place of regret." A poetic device used to portray the mood is personification because regret is a human emotion.

  3. You did a great job establishing happiness on the beach "trying to hide beneath screams of joy". Showing the mood of people on the beach. Then later in the poem you introduce the dark effect of people littering on the beach and overall not caring about the earth.
