Childhood Obesity

By Lee W.

Did you know by 2030 50% of kids will be obese? Childhood obesity is one of the biggest epidemics in the world today.  Childhood obesity is ascending on the charts, so if we don't stop this epidemic it will grow out of our control.

One colossal cause of childhood obesity is the parents effect on their kids.  If only one parent is obese, it increases the child rate to be obese by three times. If two parents are obese, it increases their child’s rate to be obese by ten times. Sometimes it’s genetic, and sometimes it’s not. If it's genetic then the people in that family have high cholesterol. If it’s not genetic, most likely, the child eats what their parents eat.

There are 189,483,320 obese 2 to 5 year olds in the world, which is equevilent to 9.4%, and that number is rapidly burgeoning.  1 in every 6 children are obese in the United States. All states have a population of 20% or more that are obese.

The primary effects of childhood obesity are Diabetes, heart attack, strokes and other diseases. Most of these effects happen when the fat builds up in your veins and blocks the blood, keeping it from moving through the vein.

A few ways kids get obese or overwight are consuming too much food, not consuming healthy food, too much sreen time and not enough physical activities. A few ways that you can prevent obesity are having a healthy diet, playing a sport, and one hour of physical activities a day.

17% of kids are obese, and we can’t let that number get any bigger. Obesity is a major health concern that isn't being taken seriously by some people. Obesity can have its effects on kids for their entire lives, but we can save the future generation by eating better and being more active in everyday life.

  1. The author’s opinion is on how we should help and stop obesity for future generations to come. I do agree with the author’s opinion because it says that “17% of kids are obese, and we can’t let that number get any bigger."I agree with this because the more obese kids we have the higher the possibility is that they will not do an hour of any physical activities or do a healthy diet.

  2. Lee, I loved your editorial. I agree with you that we should try our best to stop obesity from growing in our country. The sentence, “There are 189,483,320 obese 2 to 5 year olds in the world,” really opened my eyes about how big this problem is, and thats only 3 years worth of children, i’m just imagining how many in a 10 year difference! It has been proven that 2.8 million people die from obesity every year. Who would want to live with the fact that their family member died from obesity when it could have been prevented? Overall geat job lee!

  3. In your Personal Narrative, you claim “ Childhood obesity is ascending on the charts, so if we don't stop this epidemic it will grow out of our control.“ I agree with your claim about obesity rates because it is becoming a big problem for people's health. One of the pieces of information in your writing that supports this says “The primary effects of childhood obesity are Diabetes, heart attack, strokes, and other diseases.” This shows that this is not healthy for people as it increases many physical problems which could be fatal.

  4. The opinion that the author seems to have on the topic is that obesity is a problem in our world and the author wants to stop it. I also agree with the author about this topic and I also feel like it needs to be controlled. I agree with the author because of all the great information you have, like when you give some examples on how children can become obese on paragraph 5,
“A few ways kids get obese or overweight are consuming too much food, not consuming healthy food, too much screen time and not enough physical activities.” Then you give a examples on how they can prevent it on the same paragraph,
“A few ways that you can prevent obesity are having a healthy diet, playing a sport, and one hour of physical activities a day.” All of this info is really helpful because I can take it and actually help other people.

  5. In his story he talks about kids more likely to be obese when they are older. He states that we can help that problem by eating better and not eating junk food as much. I agree with Lee because if that does happen then eating better will prevent that cause. I agree with him because if 50% of kids do start to actually get obese then eating healthy food and eating better in general is great for them. In his story he says “There are 189,483,320 obese 2 to 5 year olds in the world, which is equevilent to 9.4%, and that number is rapidly burgeoning.” That can be very bad for a kid at such a young age. It might also cause something while growing up. Whether it be disease of some sort or something way worse
