Women Don’t Get Enough Attention in Sports
By: Natalie Hankin
Have you ever thought about how much you see women's sports being broadcasted? Well, it's not a lot. That's because women’s sports do not get the same attention as men’s sports do. Few watch women's sports because men are favored over the women.
In the NBA (National Basketball Association) the average men's salary is 7.7 million dollars. In the WNBA (Women's National Basketball Association) the women's salary is only 100,658.10 dollars. They are not earning enough money because media coverages do not want to cover women's sports. Women's sports receive 0.4% total sponsorships because there are no media coverages that actually want to cover women. Media coverage favors men’s sports because they have higher production values and higher quality coverage. The men will always get more money than the women because media coverages do not give the women the chance to improve and make more money.
Maya Moore has won nine rings and four titles in less than a decade. Maya Moore played for the Lynx when she played in the WNBA. She is easily the most underrated women’s basketball player. Her dominance is unmatched. Most people think Lebron James is the greatest basketball player of all time. Lebron James has only won three titles, and it took him more than a decade. Moore, on the other hand, has won four titles in less than a decade, and that's not even including her international play. People have no clue who Maya Moore is because women’s sports is not appreciated enough.
ESPN makes a list every year highlighting the top 100 athletes in the world. Maya Moore isn’t even highlighted by ESPN world of fame list. There were only 12 women on that list. Most of the women were below the 80s spot on the list. There was only one woman over the 80s, and it was Serena Williams; she was at the 12th spot on the list. “Unfortunately, half the women on the list didn't even make an appearance until the late 80s,” said OberLineReview.
At the 2021 March Madness, “the men’s teams having all kinds of weightlifting machinery, all the women received was a rack of dumbbells," said Sedona Prince. The women should not have to go through this. The weight room issue was getting so much attraction that the people running March Madness had to add more machinery into the women's weight room.
As you can tell, men get a lot more attention than women in sports. It's time to wake up and put a stop to this discrimination. This will not stop soon if people do not help out and fight for women to get more media attention.
Natalie, The attention of Women's sports should be higher. I like how you explained every little detail as your editorial progressed. In your paragraph about how Maya Moore should be the best player of all time I definitely agree that she should be. The WNBA should be paid more, have more sponsors and should be recognized more. When you said, “Unfortunately, half the women on the list didn't even make an appearance until the late 80s,” it really shows how much more women athletes need to be appreciated.
ReplyDeleteNatalie I believe that your opinion is that Women sports should get more attention and broadcasted and things like that. And I agree with you 100% because all of men's sports get put on TV and get so much attention but Women sports is the opposite. I agree with you because like you said in the NBA and average man's salary is 7.7 million dollars and womens is just 100,658.10 dollars which is a very big difference. Another thing is that Women's sports receive 0.4 total sponsorship because no media coverages that want to cover women sports. Men get way more than that because media coverage favors men’s sports because they have higher production values and higher quality coverage. So I agree that it should be more balanced out because women work just as hard as men and they still get treated like men are so much better.
ReplyDeleteIn Natalie’s story she shows her opinion very well. I can easily tell what her opinion is, based on all of the facts and details she gives me. Natalie’s opinion on the issue is that she thinks it is unfair that men’s sports get more attention than women’s sports. In her story she included the fact, “Women's sports receive 0.4% total sponsorships because there are no media coverages that actually want to cover women.” That shows that women’s sport’s do not get the attention they deserve. I agree with Natalie because Sedona Prince who is a woman athlete said, “At the 2021 March Madness, the men’s teams had all kinds of weightlifting machinery, all the women received was a rack of dumbbells." The women want to exercise and get better just as much as men do. They also want to be known and rewarded for their accomplishments. I agree with Natalie because women should get recognized for their achievements and accomplishments.
ReplyDeleteIt's not a story.
DeleteNatalie, the topic you chose is a very big and important topic. Men’s sports and Women’s do not get rated equally. You included and had a lot of facts and important details. Mentions people's salary really puts it into perspective. I agree that Women's sports don’t get as much attention as men's sports. Mentioning the percentage of total sponsorships for women’s sport really makes you think about the difference. I agree with you because not everyone has even heard of the WNBA. Everyone knows about the NBA (like mentioned in the editorial). I agree with you because what you are trying to say is true. The fact that the media only wants to broadcast men’s sports more than women’s sports is something to think about.
ReplyDeleteI like how u talk how you talk about how much more men get paid than women and I totally agree with you they should have equal pay I also think that if women aren't getting sponsored neither should the men I only ever saw a few sponsored women by Nike I see way more nike sponsor men than women and I only ever see male players getting the shoes the brands all that stuff there should be way more women designs and brands Keep up the great work girl!.
ReplyDeleteNatalie I love the topic you chose to write about, and I can definitely understand how much you care about women's sports, and them not being supported. I can see how you are mad and annoyed at this and I can understand. I totally agree with you on this argument, and women deserve more attention. One fact that you said that really makes me agree with you is the difference between mens and womens salaries. You said that men make 7.7 million dollars and women only make 100,658.10 dollars. This is so unfair to women, just like you said because they are playing the same sport therefore they should get paid the same. You did a great job on your argument and maybe more people will start to care about women's sports.
