Smoking Should be Illegalized

By: Siddarth Sivakumar

Did you know 6 million people die every year from tobacco alone? Smoking is one of the most addicting and abusive drugs globally, yet nicotine products can be found almost anywhere. If the nicotine complication isn’t dealt with properly, the problem will ascend beyond our capability.

Numerous people don’t know that nicotine is not a recreational drug, so it shouldn’t be used for delight daily like people typically use it. Even smoking once can lead to a deadly addiction; that's what happens to 80 to 90 percent of people who smoke or use any tobacco products, including another 67 percent who may or may not be addicted but get deleterious diseases and/or cancers because of the vast ocean of the lethal drug in their bodies.

The people who use nicotine products are mainly people not educated enough to differentiate what's good for them from what can be fatal; the companies running the tobacco industry profit enormously as the global tobacco market was estimated to be 867.6 billion USD, and over the next couple years will grow over 1 trillion dollars and will only burgeon if not entirely stopped. For the people who fall into their advertising, this number won’t stop; it will only rapidly burgeon.

Smoking bans have been implemented, but not the ones people expect; the actual smoke from smoking is dangerously atrocious to your skin even if you don’t smoke at all. Smoke-free indoor policies prevent casinos, gaming venues, and multi-unit housing from smoking indoors as skin cancer from severe cell defects will lead to squamous skin cancer or cancers related to the mouth, throat, kidneys, or bladder, and SFS exposure can also lead to the same effects.

The government has to step up and fix the smoking crisis as soon as possible, yet that's just the thing the government can’t do as that would be against people’s freedom since the government can’t discriminate against what anyone can engage in, causing a restriction of human liberties in the nation, which would lead to smuggling and organized crime and would probably cause a decrease in tobacco needs and resources. This may be the case, just like the alcohol ban in 1920 when  drinking decreased by 30% and then skyrocketed passed 60%; the way tobacco consumption is going right now, putting bans on it will result in the same events happening, the desperation of people’s smoking habits to not stop, and will drastically increase with the withdrawal pain. This increase will not be known for a long time until it puts an unhealable scar on people's lives.

Over 30 million people smoke just in the United States.  We can’t let smoking become normalized in our society. The only way society will accomplish such a feat is if we educate people on the effects of nicotine and show them something that's only temporary and isn’t worth threatening their whole live. Using the voice we all have can put an end to one of the biggest epidemics in the world.

  1. Nice Editorial! Your opinion on smoking is evident in your expressions. By stating the facts, and using strong language such as lethal and deleterious. I do agree with your opinion on this matter. Based on the facts you have presented, and my outside knowledge I agree with you. I agree with you because of the numbers you mentioned. You also said that 30 million people smoke in America. This showed me what a widespread problem it is. By using a convincing tone, you helped us to see that we all have to take part in stopping the spread of this problem.

  2. Hi Siddarth
I loved your editorial. It was amazing. I loved how you added so many facts. I feel your opinion is about banning smoking or making smoking illegal. I agree with your opinion because smoking is a very serious topic because like you said about 6 million people die in a year just because of smoking. Also, you said that over 30 million people smoke just in the US. Imagine how many people there could be smoking in the whole world. I felt like your conclusion summed your purpose or your opinion about this topic. Overall good job!

  3. The author's point of view is that smoking should be legalized and that no one should be able to smoke. I agree because like it said in the story ‘‘ even if someone just does it once it can still lead to a deadly addiction that happens to 80-90 percent of people’’. Which people don't understand and they need to know, another thing people who do nicotine and smoke are normally are the ones who don't have a lot of education to know what is good for them and what is bad for them. ‘‘You can get skin cancer from smoking indoors. Also people who have only smoked once can still have a big risk of having skin cancer just like people who smoke daily.’’ That's why I agree because there are so many reasons why smoking should be legal.

  4. I think your topic was a good topic to think about. I know that your opinion on people using cigarettes was you not wanting people to use cigarettes. Not just you but many people don’t want smoking to be a normality, so I agree with your topic. I agree with you because like I said nobody wants smoking to be a normality. And cancer is also one of the causes that kills people while they're smoking, also cigarettes made over 850 billion dollars. And if the government banned cigarettes for purchase; the market would crash and the use of cigarettes would go up 60% according to your information. And many people still smoke till this day; even though they know the facts.

  5. Your opinion that smoking should be banned is one that I agree with. In your Editorial, you wrote, “Did you know 6 million people die every year from tobacco alone?” Since cigarettes are mainly made of tobacco, 6 million people probably die every year from cigarettes, too. Inhaling smoke is never good. In your fourth paragraph, you wrote that smoking can affect a lot of the parts of the human body, including the mouth, throat, kidneys, or bladder! It can even cause cancer! With all of these disadvantages proven, there is no reason to smoke for any reason, especially pleasure. There are many other things that can grant pleasure, not only smoking. You also wrote that 80 to 90 percent of people will get addicted when they try smoking. With this information, trying to smoke wouldn’t even be an option. Even if 10 to 20 percent of people won’t get addicted, why take a chance to get cancer? I agree with your opinion on the illegalising of smoking, and it should be done immediately.

  6. From what I read in your story, your opinion on the issue of smoking is that it is very dangerous and should be illegalized in order to not only keep the people who do smoke safe, but also the people who they may smoke around safe as well. I strongly agree with your opinion! I agree with your opinion because of the humongous amounts of information and evidence you provide to support your central idea such as, “Even smoking once can lead to an addiction; that’s what happens to 80 or 90 percent of people who smoke or use any tobacco products, including another 67 percent who may or may not be addicted but get deleterious diseases and/or cancers because of the vast ocean of the lethal drug in their bodies,” and, “ the actual smoke from smoking is dangerously atrocious to your skin even if you don’t smoke at all.”
